Physiotherapy Department |
The Physiotherapy Department is a leader in the field of pediatric rehabilitation. Physiotherapists relate to the patient's motor-sensory system which includes deep and surface sensation, the muscular skeletal system, the respiratory system as well as the integration of these systems within the context of a child's daily activities. The physiotherapy treatments at Alyn are carried out with the cooperation of each particular patient and focus on encouragement in order to give the patient a feeling of success. What are the goals of physiotherapy? × to bring the patient to the highest possible level of functioning within the community, within his/her peer group and within the home environment × to reduce the patient's physical difficulties as much as possible and to concentrate on bringing the realistic abilities of each child to the forefront whilst taking into account the differing needs of each patient and their environment Here in Alyn we believe that the therapists must take into account the future of each child and - together with the child and his/her family - plan rehabilitation goals accordingly. Who are the patients? Almost every child who receives treatment within Alyn's various departments i.e. from \"Shachar\" Alyn's Rehabilitation Educational Medical Day Care Center, the intensive care Respiratory Rehabilitation Unit, the Rehabilitation Department and from all the outpatient clinics, requires some physiotherapy. In addition children are referred directly from the community to the physiotherapy department for individual treatment. Patients in the Physiotherapy Department have been referred to Alyn – in its capacity as a unique rehabilitation facility - for professional evaluation where all the needs of the patient are taken into account and recommendations are made for aids and specialized treatment, including booster treatments, which the child can not receive within the community framework. What treatment techniques and approaches are employed? Alyn's team of physiotherapists have the ability and professionalism to use all the recognized therapeutic techniques including unique approaches to hydrotherapy. In addition the patients benefit from the most up-to-date equipment available. Alyn's physiotherapists are very much involved in on-going research projects and as a result they regularly introduce original and innovative treatment methods into the Department. Treatment goals include: × learning to be independent in the execution of various transfers - in bed and in a wheelchair - to achieving independent walking, climbing up and down stairs, running, success in ball games etc. × improvement of balance in relation to various functional situations × hydrotherapy (treatment in water) working to improve range of motion, balance, level of relaxation etc.. × muscle strengthening and improving endurance by riding a therapeutic tricycle, hydrotherapy treatments etc. × improving respiratory function using various \"tools\" such as a cough simulator and specialized equipment to practice breathing |
