HAMMER TOE
General
General
Deformity of the lesser toes in which there is-
flexion of the proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joint
Apassive extension of MTP joint occurs when the toe-
is flat on the ground. The DIP joint is usually not
affected
Caused by chronic tight shoe wear that crowds the-
toes, but may be seen after trauma
Clinical
Obvious deformity as described previously-
Pain is present in the toe and patient has difficulty with footwear-
Imaging
Standing AP and lateral help exclude other diagnosis-
Treatment
Shoes with roomy toe boxes. Shoes should be 1/2 inch longer than thelongest toe
